I bought this unit not really knowing what to expect.

The first thing I did was to buy a 95"screen(Da-lite) next a DVD player(Samsung) that doubles the lines to 1080 and then a HDTV tuner(LG). This little unit is fantastic for watching PBS Nature programs in HD and it does well with movies too. I had to darken the window light in order to get optimal effect. The sound comes from a set of Altec Lansing 5.1 computer speakers w/ sub woofer.

I have installed and set-up projection systems as part of my job and I think this system does a great job,as I have it. I bought a HD Camcorder (Sony HDR-HC1) and it looks very pro on this system!

Final Note: Finally a hobbiest can now capture,edit,project video,and audio in a truly professional manner. I've played with video since the early 1970's, starting with the Sony Portapak, and now I've realized a dream, started so many years ago.

"Good For Trying Out Giant Screen Viewing" 2005-12-27

Despite the low 350:1 contrast ratio claimed by the manufacturer, at 800x600 resolution, this little budget projector delivers decently in giant screen entertainment.

Picture quality is at maximum when you set up the unit in a nearly pitch black room. The contrast is at its best around 85 and the brightness at around 65: daylight scenes look good even on a white wall, but the low contrast ratio of 350:1 is really bad for movies with excessive dark scenes and shadows. The black level adjuster is somewhat a reduntant feature as it washes out shadows further from darker scenes.

The focus range is not to my liking since I had the projector set up in a somewhat small room with lots of objects hanging from the wall: The projector can achieve a screen size of over 40" within a 1.4 meter throwing distance. It's good for someone who wants a giant bright screen in a very confined space.

As the projector has only a trapezoidal keystone corrector, it is limited to be installed to face the projection wall / screen at a perpendicular angle. Therefore, celing mount may be a good idea if you want to sit close to the center of the screen.

The light source / lamp is claimed to be able to last for 4000 hours under standard brightness setting; with the replacement lamp at around USD 300 locally, it may be time for a projector upgrade when you burn out the 5th bulb.

Considering how cheap this projector is (the cinema standard high-end Sony VPL-HS50 with 6000:1 contrast ratio goes for USD 2600 over here in KL), this Sony VPL-ES2 is worth pretty much every cent you pay for, and if you're sick of LCD projection technology by the end of the unit's third lamp life, you wouldn't have to think too long before going out to find yourself a Sony 40" LCD screen that cost 7 times more than the projector but has a backlight that lasts around

60,000 hours.

Imagine my surprise when I found out they only make iPOD accessories. Even though I love how the walkman works, WHY would you ever buy one, if you can't get accessories! What an incredibility STUPID company. I wrote an email to them an got no response. So, I will never again buy another Sony product.

As Marshall McLuhan said, "the medium is the message". This is a television that says something about the owner and that message is "I can afford to spend the price of a medium sized family car on a TV set that will be obsolete within a couple of years". In this respect there can be no doubt that the 70 inch Sony XBR accomplishes its intended purpose brilliantly.

The truly discerning purchaser will use this set to watch CNBC or Fox News, or rather display the same disregarded in the corner of the room while paying attention to something else.

There are larger TV sets out there, but the 120" Philips LED display has a pathetic resolution and the 150" Panasonic weighs about as much as the Ferrari you could buy instead. Actually, the Panasonic does at least have a sensible use - as a cinema screen.

Buy with pride and think not that you could buy the 60" less than a fifth the price and use the remainder to build a health clinic or school in a deprived part of the world and put a picture of it on your wall instead. One advantage of that approach is that with no sound to turn off, its a lot easier to ignore.

I saw this PJ in action last night. The source was a Sony BluRay DVD player and a BR pressing of Spiderman 2. The picture clarity was amazing. Rock solid image with (not surprisingly) incredible definition. I can't, however give it 5 stars. Perhaps the colour calibration was not perfect (altough Sony reps were on hand so "their bad" if they set it up poorly) - in particular the reds were far too prominent.

This is a 3 chip, native 1920x1080 unit, so no colour wheel and, hence, no rainbow effects. It also runs super quiet (again, no wheel) and pushes surprisingly little air out of the read-ported vent. The air that was coming out *was* pretty hot, so any room that hosts this bad boy should have good ventilation.

It's an attractive unit and, stealing from Apple, the "sony" logo is rear-lit when the unit is turned on. The screen was a pretty small Stewart Filmscreens Greyhawk, so contrast ratios were additionally boosted. Due to the small size, the image was exceptionally bright.

At this resolution, it was interesting to note how clearly computer generated the Spiderman scene appeared. On SD units, there's enough softening of the edges to hide the CG nature of the image and complete the illusion. At HiDef res, however, the blue-screen and CG became quite obvious.

Hollywood Actors/Actresses: beware! Your wrinkles and blemishes will soon be splashing their way across 120" HiDef screens all over the world! :)

At under $9K for a 3-chip DLP, Sony have really thrown down the gauntlet with this one. Expect competitors to follow and hopefully we'll all be able to afford something of this spec within just a few more years.

I bought this TV in October 2008.It was shipped to me, in south Florida, from California and out of the box the picture and sound were great.

I have Dish Network HD service and the receiver to the TV connection is HDMI.I also have a VCR\DVD combo unit connected using component cables.

I have the Sony 32S3000 which is now 20 months old and I calibrated it using AVIA II.So,I used those values for the 37M initially, and after about six weeks of use I calibrated it using AVIA.The value differences were very slight.

I have a feeling the negative reviews are based on initial impressions and maybe there is a bad connection or an incorrect connection.The Sony manual is very informative.

Also,set your receiver to the native resolution of the TV, which is 720P.I also have the sound set to PCM ONLY and the RF MODE on the Dish receiver.This prevents the sound levels from fluctuating in two channel stereo.

I think this TV, as well as my other Sony, are fantastic.I definitly recommend.

I purchased this elsewhere for $600. At the time you couldn't get a 37" LCD for that price. I trusted the Sony name based on my own personal experience with a variety of their products, but I am very disappointed with this set. The image quality is sub-par. As many of the other reviews state, it looks like a pixelated mess. Fortunately this is a secondary TV that is in the bedroom, and viewed from enough of a distance that its watchable. I would not recommend this set.

I bought this TV relying on the name "Sony" and for the price, but it's an old saying, you get what you pay for, even for a Sony. Although no comparison to an XBR, this TV is worst than my Westinghouse in my bedroom. The Colors are weak and details are lacking. There is a fuzzy look to the picture despite playing around with the settings. I should've spent more money and gotten a higher end model rather than this one.

Buy something else. The people who left a good review on this tv must not have ever owned a hdtv before or are fanatics. Picture is grainy and pixelated. You will think your watching youtube videos! I spent hours trying to get a good picture out of it. The cable box guide is almost unreadable on this tv. The white letters do that rainbow thing (like when you used the single composite video cable back in the day) only this is with HDMI.

"Great way to consolidate your Blu-ray/DVD collection" 2009-12-31

The Sony "mega changer" is a unique product, capable of storing a medium-sized disc collection in a single, convenient device.

A wide range of disc types are supported in addition to Blu-ray, including conventional DVDs and audio CDs. Note that DVD-Audio, HD-DVD and SACD are *not* supported.

The build quality is first rate, typical of a Sony "ES" product. It weighs over 30 pounds and seems like it's built to last a while. It hooks up easily using a single HDMI cable (assuming what you're connecting to accepts this type of input). If you're using Sony gear, you can control the "mega changer" using a common remote and Sony's "Bravia Sync" protocol. For older equipment, there are 2 and 7 channel analog outputs, as well as digital coax. If you use high-end AV control system (such as Crestron), there are RS-232 inputs as well. The 5-year warranty is also a good touch.

In terms of sound and picture quality, I'd rate it as excellent. I have a variety of other high-end disc players, and in no case could I see or hear differences on the Sony. DVDs are upscaled for better performance, and the unit supports 24p True Cinema, BD-Live and so on. It supports all the latest surround audio formats and video features, and Sony has a built-in network connection supporting easy firmware updating. While I haven't seen a specific commitment from Sony to support future standards, at least the infrastructure is there if they choose to do so.

The unit also features a built-in Ethernet port that can connect to the Gracenote service to retrieve album art and disc cover graphics. This is a nice touch, saving you from having to manually enter disc information most of the time. Unfortunately, the graphics are sometimes low resolution and on a small display, they can be difficult to see clearly. Also, on prior generations of this product, Sony included a way to connect a computer keyboard so you could easily edit disc information. This feature has been dropped on the BDP-CX7000ES...so long as you're Ethernet connected and storing discs that can be found in the Gracenote service, this isn't a big deal - but if (for instance) you tend to burn your own discs and want to edit titles, it can be quite a chore doing it without a keyboard. Some complain about the lack of WiFi, but you can always use a wireless Ethernet bridge to eliminate the need for any cables (this is how I have mine connected, and it works fine).

Finding discs is always a challenge with units like this, and so Sony provides a variety of ways your collection can be indexed. It's possible to search by title, genre, rating - even director and cast member.

The unit can be somewhat slow loading and unloading discs, which I guess is a function of the size of the carousel. It can take 30 seconds to unload a disc, spin the unit to the desired slot, then load the chosen disc.

There's also a slot that can be used to play a single disc without loading it into the unit. This is a good idea, but as I've kept my single disc player connected to my system, I don't use the Sony for this type of disc. Similarly, there's a USB port for connecting various types of media to the unit (for instance, special BD-Live content, or photos, etc). So far, I haven't found a compelling use of this feature since it duplicates capabilities I have on other devices.

One problem I've had with the unit is that it seems sensitive to being moved - some of the discs seemed to move out of their slots just by sliding the device on its shelf. It seems important to not move the unit once its loaded with discs.

Although this is a fine unit overall, there are a few other areas that could use improvement:

1. WiFi should be built-in...I shouldn't need to buy an outboard Ethernet bridge to connect wirelessly.

2. The Gracenote service is still immature, mislabling about 10-20% of all discs.

3. Would be nice to have built-in support for Amazon's video on demand (or Netflix).

4. Takes a long time to setup initially if you have lots of discs. A wireless keyboard would be a big help.

5. The overall software interface is a bit clumsy...would be nice if it was easier to simply connect the device (over that USB channel?) to a Windows Media Center or iTunes.

6. It runs a bit hot in an enclosed cabinet and tends to generate audible fan noise.

7. Would be nice to have a way to link multiple units for those having more than 400 discs. While you can certainly connect multiple units to your system, each acts independently - without a coordinated index, you need to remember which discs are in which player.

Still, in spite of these shortcomings, I think this is a great product and I give it a solid four stars. It would probably be five stars for picture and sound quality, five stars for construction quality, and three stars for usability and software design.

Summary:

The Blu Ray Player landscape has become increasingly competitive in the past year as players have gotten cheaper, faster, more complete and added new features like Netflix streaming or wireless connectivity. The Oppo's emergence of a very strong purist player effectively crumpled the ceiling for mid-range players in my opinion.

Sony's upper mid-ranged BDP-S1000ES is a very capable player offering quality DVD and BD images with the convenience of wireless connectivity. That said, I struggle to see the value proposition of this player priced at $700 to an educated consumer. It is quick, but not fast. It offers some neat features, but lacks what I consider the most meaningful non disc playback (ie Netflix). Its touted image enhancement features tend to render a synthetic image whose contrast and pop is delivered at the cost of relatively common jaggies. While some might prefer this image (especially on the smoothening engines of soem LCDs). I struggle to describe the overall image with its enhancing engines without using the word artificial or synthetic.

My biggest criticism is not with the player but with its price. At $700, this player is grossly over-priced in my opinion (this is reflected in my 6.5 value rating). The LG BD390 offers very similar dvd performance and more features at half the price. For those looking for simply quality DVD and BD playback, the Pioneer 320 is its equal in most ways at nearly a third of its price. Sony missed an opportunity to introduce a class-leading player by introducing this player as is at $300 or $400 with netflix and other video-streaming features. Simply put, there are so many better options at this price point - like an oppo and a roku or a lg 390 and a pioneer 320 - both combined at lower the cost than this player!

In the interest of comparing the 1000 against an established performer (Oppo) and a very popular player (LG), I thought I would provide some anecdotal commentary of their respective performance for SD DVDs. LG and Sony appear to use their own chipset while Oppo uses the ABT 2010. In regard to film cadence recognition, the ABT is one of the best and quickest. I noticed a rather unusual occurrence with the Sony. Unlike other second set lock-on recognition, the Sony seemed to require a few seconds to lock on in each set. This surprised me as it was relatively new to me in the repeating sequence. The Oppo requires lock on in the second sequence for 2:2 cadences, but once it locks on, it repeats without moiré. The Sony appears to repeat its recognition error on each set in a number of cadences.

The Sony must have some very active edge enhancement that threw off its performance on vertical scrolling text. There was readily apparent shakiness or hesitation in movement as the text moved up the screen. This was different from the video deinterlacing I saw in some lower performing players. This text hesitation was also visible in some DVD's opening credits on film.

For real world material, all three players do not differ that frequently to be perfectly candid. Only seldom does an interlacing appear. The Oppo offers realistic edge enhancement and fluidity in motion. The sony's edge enhancement is aggressive and does bring a more definitive contrast between images. That said, its enhancement does appear to come at the cost of fluidity and motion. This is probably a subjective area - some folks might like the pop it brings and might play better on the high hertz lcds that sony makes.

In the second chapter of killshot (with opening credits), I did see a minor jaggie in the bumper of the blue Cadillac with the LG and the Sony. This was not present in the Oppo (and the Marantz 7004). Edge enhancement was the strongest with the Sony in most scenes; this might be desirable for those looking for a very poppy image with a smoothening engine on an lcd. For me, I found it a bit unnatural on my plasma. Some details were enhanced at the cost of others ie the distinct lines of people against the scenery over-powered the details of their faces, predominantly in medium zoomed perspectives.

Sony PQ adjustments:

The overlaid display menu allows for +/-3 settings for the HD enhancer. It appears to have an impact on contrst and edge enhancement. I pasued a dark scene and noticed that the contrast between dark and light images was amplified with each increasing setting. The image revealed by the HD enhancer is brings out more detail as well and I think more HDish for most viewers. That said, it brings out a lot of jaggies. Back to kill shot for specific references...in the third scene after the screen door moire, Mickey Rourke walks in a house with vertical paneling. To his right (screen left), you can see very noticeable jaggies on the vertical lines with +3. At the zero setting, thereis no moire. To an untrained eye, the +3 yeilds a better image. It bothers me with the amount of jaggies it creates.

There is also a smoothening feature - I was unable to see that big of a difference, but did detect slight tearing on fast motion with it dialed off the zero default position.

Another note:

The Sony had trouble with three of my burned DVD+Rs. Both the LG and the Oppo played them without issue. I tried some of the non-playing discs on my Marantz and Onkyo HD DVD player and both played them without issue. I am not trying to indict the Sony for poor error recognition of burned media, but I do want to pt this out.

After doing what seemed to be more research than I put into my master's thesis, I came up with a short list of LCDs. Finally I compared this tv in store against the vizio 55in 'led', a panasonic plasma, a Sharp and another Sony. All were in comparable price/feature range. Doing a little tweaking in the store I got a good picture easily with the KDL52 VE5 and I liked the energy saving features (HCFL, sensors, ability to completely turn off power). After getting the unit home, a couple of days worth of tweaking provided a really nice picture. The contrast is good. No or very little motion blur. I have not seen any of dark scene blue tint reported in CNET's review. I have a nice Panasonic DVD burner with HDMI and upscaling and my DVDs look great. We play Wii and everyone loves the graphics. We watch tv through a digital cable box with HDMI, and even non-digital channels look good. My wife even watches a pay channel from Russia and even with its conversion from Russian Pal/Seacam (whatever their color standard is now) and being standard definition it looks good.

Yes the sound is not great but we have a relatively small LR and it is fine. I use the TrueSurround setting and it is more than satisfactory. When I want bigger sound (certain DVDs or Concerts) I use our stereo system sound.

So now after having the tv for a few weeks I have absolutely no buyers remorse and I would readily recommend the unit to others.

I bought this after a 32" Samsung stopped working with certain HDMI sources. I still love Samsung, but after that one mysteriously stopped working I decided I'd try something new. And I'm glad I did. The 52" size is really perfect for my room. It's definitely a large set, but not so large that images feel overly stretched across its surface.

Initially I was very disappointed with the image quality. The issue is that when the light sensor is turned on, the backlight slider can be set to full power, but you're only experiencing a fraction of this set's incredible brightness. Although the brightness sensor seems like a great feature, I found that overall it was too aggressive in reducing brightness, so I have to recommend that it be turned off. Ironically, it works better in well-lit rooms than dark. Once you have full control over the backlighting, this set really shines. The contrast is excellent (my camera has a contrast ratio of 2000:1, and it couldn't capture this TV's image fully). So I can believe that it has the 5000:1 on-screen contrast that Sony claims.

Personally, I don't like my image tampered with. The low setting of motionflow is okay, but the high setting is really comical and only good if you crave that look of sped up footage. The contrast enhancer I also don't find necessary, since the image has great contrast natively. However, I do like that you can create multiple image settings for each input. For example, I can quickly toggle between a game setting and a movie setting when using my PS3.

Sound quality is fair. Nothing to write home about. I certainly don't use TV speakers with an image this good, and don't recommend anyone else does either.

The energy saving features and setup of this set are really excellent. My surge protector monitors current, and this tv usually uses only 0.4 amps (~50 watts). It's mainly dependent on the backlight brightness, but even so, this is one very efficient product. I was worried that the unique backlight would tinge the color, but as far as I can tell, it's spot-on. The motion sensing really does work. I leave it set to 30 minutes and it hasn't shut off on me yet, which is good. Sony doesn't mention this much on their website, but it's also heat-sensing, which could explain it's sensitivity. I sit 13 feet away, and it detects my motion with little difficulty.

The worst part about the TV is either the remote, or the fact that the inputs are on the side. If you end up swapping inputs a lot, I suppose it's nice, but otherwise I feel it's a poor design decision. Depending on the heft of your wires, and your seating angle, you could be looking at HDMI cables out the side of your otherwise beautiful tv set. The remote is very basic. Compared to the older V-series Bravias, this TV actually has the less fancy interface (the XMB went hand in hand with a nicer remote for the 4100 series). That said, I don't feel affected by either. If the decision to drop a pointlessly shiny interface and fancier remote keeps the price down, I'm all for it. I use a Fios or universal remote almost exclusively, so I don't miss it. And since I don't use the TV to tune my programming, the XMB would be a waste. That said, this interface is fine, very logical and doesn't hide settings too deep (except motion flow). No frills, but won't disappoint either.

I wish Sony had included a little more detail in their manual, but I doubt most people even read those anymore, so I'm just nit picking. The stand is pretty good, although Sony recommends you anchor down the TV to the wall, which might be a good idea. Shame the stand doesn't swivel, as I have two common sitting positions in my room. Oh well. The important thing is that the image quality on this TV is superb, there are no oversights that ruin the usability or connectivity of the TV, it's very energy efficient, and it looks good even when off. I fully recommend this TV if you like the V-series, and are interested in saving some energy.

I just got it yesterday and as soon I took it out of the box I was happy with my purchase.

The picture and colors are awesome, I don't know what else to ask. Before that TV, I purchased one of the LG 55 inch tv-s.

I was deeply disappointed. Coloring was so dull.. that it just made me feel really sad about my purchase. I'm more picky then my husband about quality about electronics, but even he was not happy. We did return it and we decided to go with our first choice( Sony) anyway. So, if you put together great picture and colors, easiness of use and quality you can not go wrong with Sony! A big PLUS is also the energy savings. Energy usage is below Energy star 3.0 qualifications. Plus Motion Sensor ( turns off the tv when no one is detected moving for certain period of time). Yesterday after working 5 hours straight, the tv was not even a little warm! Go Sony ECO! Didn't give 5 stars for sound because if you would like to have full experience with your tv you would want to have Home Theatre system. But if you are not that picky, you'll be fine with that.

End credits: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!

"Great TV, especially on power usage" 2009-11-10

Having been burned on many appliances using way too much power (and I pay as much as $0.40 a kWh thanks to Enron screwing California's "grandmas"), I was attracted to the power saving features on this TV. But the small number of reviews made me wonder if I was missing something, even though all but one were 5 stars. Having had the set for a week, I can now rest easy. The picture is great, the power is what they claim (except as noted below), the sound is good (we didn't want a home theater system) and, in general I am very pleased with my purchase.

Pros:

1. The picture is stunning. I couldn't compare side-by-side with other TV's, but I am totally pleased.

2. The power consumption is as advertised. I have a power meter and check out all new appliances -- and have had some real surprises in the past, including with another Sony TV, but that's another story. (See my review under Sony's KDL-37XBR6 for that saga.) During the day, this 52" tv uses 140 watts in Standard mode, 100 watts in Cinema mode, and 150 watts in Vivid mode. I like Standard best during the day. At night, with the Light Sensor enabled (the default), the power drops to about 75 watts in Standard mode, but the picture is way too dim for my taste, so I've had to turn off the Light Sensor. Instead, I either use Standard mode all the time, or move to Cinema mode at night (which is fine, but a bit of a pain to change -- I wish Light Sensor was not so aggressive or there were a user setting to adjust it from 0 to 100%). This compares to 200 watts for my 37" Sony purchased a year ago, so this set is really doing much better.

3. The sound is fine for us. Since we're not into home theater, you can tell we're not into ground shaking bass. But the sound from the TV's internal speakers meet our tastes fine. No tinniness or other problems mentioned on some other sets.

4. Standby power really is low. My power meter measures 0 to 0.2 watts, not that it's very accurate at that level. I have not yet hooked up an antenna or cable connection, where the problem mentioned in #1 above with the electronic program guide might enter. When I do, though, now I'll know to look for the problem and how to fix it if it occurs -- or bug Sony until they tell me how to. (The two sets might have different procedures for turning off the useless guide that was costing me several dollars a month in electricity -- on the other Sony, not this one.)

Cons:

1. As noted above, the Light Sensor is almost useless. Way too aggressive. And, the user manual was almost no help in finding how to turn it off. It's in Setup/Eco, and to get to Setup you have to go to Picture Adjustments or another Setup category. I didn't see Setup as an option itself.

2. The motion sensor is useless. It only works to 9.5' which is not far enough for a 52" TV. Probably more useful on the smaller models. The unit ships with motion sensor off as the default, a sign that Sony recognizes (but did not fix) the problem.

Caveats:

1. We drive the set only with a TiVo box, a PS3 (blu-ray!) and other external signals. I have not yet tested the internal tuner, so the slow tuning problem mentioned by the single 1 star review is not something I'd see. I also wonder if that's a problem with digital tuners in general or this set is uniquely slow.

2. I was unable to determine the expected life span of the hot cathode fluorescent light, or how much a replacement might cost.

3. I was unable to compare power consumption with the new (more expensive) LED backlit sets. It's hard to find power consumption ratings, much less under real use. The LED sets are also a lot more expensive to buy.

In spite of the small drawbacks, this set is so much better than others I've seen (at least when my concern for power consumption, both from an economic and environmental point of view is factored in) that it clearly rates five stars.

I have always had Sony tv's in my house. My last 27" lasted 21 years. The new one is remakable. It has all the bells and whistles you could ask for and is energy conservative as well. Once set up it is easy to use it to show displays of your Blu-ray DVD player with very little fuss. When a network is broadcasting in HD the picture looks as real as live. It has plenty of inputs to hook up into it,from computers to ipods. This is a must see to get item. Best anniversary gift I ever got.

First, I will say that I gave this product 4 stars instead of 5 because of the fact that the picture quality is honestly not as good as the best LED local dimming TV on the market (not naming names). That said, for the price this is the best thing on the market in my opinion. Here's why I chose this TV instead of the seemingly endless others - you can definitely go into choice overload when trying to buy one of these.

1) I considered the ambient light in my room and how far from the TV my couch and other chairs are. My room has a lot of light from windows, so that eliminates the Samsung products, which have too much glare. With guests, viewers would be at the side so a good side angle was important. Also, I didn't want to go any bigger than 55" because of the size of the room and where the TV would be. Make sure to measure that but don't be too shy with the size because you will get used to a larger TV after a day or so.

2) I considered refresh rates and the type (plasma vs LCD). We have only owned LCD TVs, so I must say that I don't have any real reason to prefer LCDs now that plasma TVs handle burn-in better than they used to. But we have owned LCDs and the depth of the blacks has improved over the years, so we stuck with the LCD. The last TV I bought had a serious jerking problem when 1080p content had a quick pan to the side, which annoyed me. With that in mind, I wanted to go for the 240 Hz refresh rate in the hopes of avoiding that problem. If you can look at standard definition content on the TV in the store, do so. But, keep in mind that you are buying it for the high def performance.

3) Next was price. More expensive TVs have diminishing returns in my opinion because the price of these things are just dropping so dramatically. My target price was around $1500 to $1800. The local dimming LED LCD TVs that have decent processors are just way too expensive for me at this point (in the $4000 range). They do look the best, but you can get something that is really good for much less.

4) Features. I really wanted internet connectivity. I use Netflix and I wanted a TV that I could stream Netflix directly without using any intermediate equipment. This is a feature that is becoming popular, so more TVs have this.

After considering these, my search was narrowed to 3 choices - the Sony Bravia XBR, the Bravia Z-series, and the Bravia W-series. They also have an eco-friendly series that is useful if you have a habit of leaving the TV on when you aren't in the room, but I don't do that so I didn't really take a hard look at them. Sony has a very helpful website that lets you compare the different types to see exactly what the differences are. Armed with the knowledge of what the technical differences were, I went to a local store to take a look at them. I didn't find the W-series, so I can't comment on that one. I found one store that had the Z-series and the XBR right next to each other. The technical difference from the Sony website is that the XBR is capable of showing a larger percentage of the color spectrum. The price difference was $300. I honestly could not tell the difference when looking at them side-by-side. So, we happily purchased the Z-series and kept that $300.

TV set-up was a breeze. Controls are very intuitive. Happily streaming Netflix with no issues and using other cool internet features like radio streaming. We are really happy with this TV. The only problem was that it's so big that standard definition DVDs look pretty bad. So, we upgraded to a blu-ray player and were back to happy viewing once again.

"240 Hz is worth the money" 2009-12-25

This is the third TV I have purchased from Amazon, and the third time I'm completely satisfied with my purchase. This TV in particular is the best to date though because of the speed in which the TV reacts to the feeds coming in. The picture moves so fast, it looks like a soap opera the way the camera moves to keep up with the motion. I cant really describe the picture clarity but it will freak you out when you see it, just make sure to adjust the motionflow to highest from the home menu.

I bought this TV plus Blue-ray player from Amazon last month. It was very easy to set up. The picture & sound quality is very good and are the features of this TV. It was very easy to setup Netflix streaming and all other internet features with a software update. Some of these features are useful but not sure how frequently I am going to use it. Please note that the default settings may not work very well. Browse other forums like "c n e t" and "a v s forum" for settings. With these settings, there is considerable improvement in picture quality. Overall, this is a fantastic TV..

vWe got first delivery and it did not work when they plugged in. Amazon white glove delivery guys who brought it in took it back and we got another one in 3 weeks. It is the best experience we have had so far. We have been able to watch some movies from web by connecting laptop. Make sure to buy an HDMI cable. I got a great deal from Sony with free sony blue ray home theater. Make sure to have some optical digital audio cables and audio cable to connect from laptop to TV.

We have basic cable but we get a lot of channels which is a bonus :)

Full Disclosure: I own the Sony KDL-52W5150 which is an idential TV to the KDL-52W5100.

My Sony 52 inch W5150/W5100 is a thing of beauty! The pictures are fabulous and it looks great in the living room also. My old 60 Hz Sharp 46 inch cannot compare to this TV in terms of deep blacks and motion picture quality. Its specs are identical to much more expensive XBR9 except for 240 Hz refresh rate.

First, the pictures are amazing! The blacks are so ridiculously black... my biggest pet peeve on a HDTV is the greyish black when there's supposed to be a black background on some older TV's. You don't have that problem with this TV. This TV has Bravia Engine 3 (Sony's latest video processor) and has a 120 Hz refresh rate. Inbetween those two, the motion judder that I used to see on my old Sharp TV during fast action scenes in movies or sports are gone. All I see is smoothe motion which is a thing of beauty. Once you turn off the "Vivid" colors mode, the colors look real and true to life. I just love it. In fact, my wife told me how she noticed for the first time all the intricate details of the makeup on the TV news anchors' faces. That's high picture quality.

Second, it looks great in the room. I love the Sony light that comes on on the bottom center of the bezel when the TV is on. (In fairness, my wife hates it so be aware that all or most late model Sony HDTV's have this feature) And it looks great whether it's on or not... showing the deep blacks and the rich colors. It really does become the center of your family/living room entertainment. Some prefer the touch of color from Samsung... I prefer the all black look of my TV.

Finally, comparing the specs on this TV versus the top of the line Sony XBR9, there wasn't enough difference to pay the extra $500 premium. Both TV's have the same contrast ratios (3,800 native, 100,000 dynamic). For novices, the contrast ratio is a rough ratio of the brightness of the darkest color the TV is capable of versus the brightest color. So the higher the number, the more capable the TV is in terms of reproducing a wide range of colors at a wide range of brightness. They also look very similar, both use the latest Bravia 3 Engine video processor to produce their pictures, have the same # of HD ports, and allow for widgets & broadband access to Internet.

The three major differences between the W and the XBR9 are the following: 1) 120 Hz vs. 240 Hz refresh rate, 2) 8 bit versus 10 bit panel, and 3) of course the $500 or so in price premium. Frankly, my research into 120 Hz vs. 240 Hz refresh rates lead me to conclusion that most people can't really notice the difference. People can notice the difference between 120 Hz and 60 Hz (as I pointed out earlier), but the 120 vs. 240 seems much more marginal. I am not such a videophile that I will pay a serious premium for a marginal difference. Then the 8 bit vs. the 10 bit panel is an even more dubious distinction. 8 bit panels allow for 17 million colors... the 10 bit panels allow a billion in theory.... But you don't really need it. That's because no content source available right now (not blue ray, not HD broadcast, HD cable/satellite) can differentiate colors to that degree and no LCD panel can reproduce that many colors at once. My advice is - save your money and buy the 10 bit panels when the content actually catches up. Buying 10 bit panel right now could be like buying a 50 inch plasma TV in 2000 for like $20K when no real HD content sources were available to take advantage of the big screen & TV capability.

The only thing this TV does not have is LED backlighting. This TV along with Z series and the XBR9 are Sony's best CCFL backlit LCD TV's. Now the latest TV's have started to use LED backlighting technology to really hike up the contrast ratio to 1 million to 1 and beyond. Sony's latest release XBR10 does this as do the Samsung B6000, B7000, B8000, and B8500 series TV's. Those TV's are fabulous TV's, and they look so cool with their super thin form factor (Samsung's are 1.2 inches thick!). But I am not prepared to pay double or even triple the cost of my W series to get a similar sized LED backlit LCD TV just yet. Wait 3 years and the prices will be MUCH cheaper, since by then larger screen true LED TV's called OLED (not the LCD with LED backlighting TV's that are available now) will probably be more widely available.

By the way, the Samsung TV most comparable to this TV is the Samsung 52B650. Both are 120 Hz, near top of line TV's with CCFL backlighting. I could have gone with either, but I ended up going with this TV because I got a great deal on it and because my sound system and blue ray player (PS3) are Sony products - hello Bravia Synch. Some do think the picture quality on the Samsung is slightly better... but I found the differences to be virtually indiscernable to my eyes. Can't go wrong with either as Samsung and Sony are, IMO, the two greatest LCD TV makers right now... but Samsung seems to be pulling ahead lately.

Overall, fabulous TV... well worth the costs. One of the best top tier, large screen size TV's available with CCFL backlighting. LED backlighting is better, but it costs over double. So for non-early adopters, this is the way to go.

We bought this 2 years ago with minimal useage during that time. The player freezes during play. It's not the DVD's. It does it for everything. The battery life isn't great. The sound is very bad. You can barely hear it in an airplane. However, the features of being able to hook it up to larger TV's and use a remote control are awesome and it's replacement will certainly have those features.

The cable arrived deffective. It was a very cumbersome porcess to send it back. I had to pay for shipping. I believe that my credit shoould include shipping both ways. The company says they don't refund shipping at all, either way. I have asked for a refund of the shipping, but havn't heard yet. Meantime, there has been no refund at all. I'm not happy with the customer service at all. The whole thing has been a rediculous red tape nightmare.

I really enjoyed this unit. For a portable, the picture quality was reasonable. I always used headphones without complaint. About 1 year after buying it (and taking very good care of it), it would start to freeze. It always happens about 30-40 min after starting so I think it something overheating. Nevertheless, it won't last long enought to get through even a short movie. Not typical Sony quality. Very dissappointing.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. Great picture quality, and a stylish design. A semi-matte screen minimizes glare and reflections and their associated distrations.

There's always someone commenting on the weakness of sound in flat panel TVs, but really... I've never had to push the sound past 33% of a set's volume capabilities. To go louder, you're talking a theatre environment, and a surround sound system would be mandatory. A TV set's speakers aren't meant to reproduce movie quality sound... just simple TV -type sound, which is exactly what it delivers, hence 5 stars.

Great image and color reproduction.

TV Guide is a great feature; it integrates with the info banner on each channel, so channel surfers can easily see what's on, and a brief description of the movie or episode. I've never seen this feature on other brands and I've had, Samsung, LG, Dynex, Sylvania and Sharp. Of course those viewers with a set top box from their cable company would utilize the TV guide from the cable company... but if you're a viewer using cable direct from the wall (like me), this feature is a deal maker.

Alas, I returned this set... only because there was a package sale on the 40XBR9!

Picture is outstanding. This is my second Bravia and third Sony (also have a Wega). When we need a new TV, we will always buy Sony. This TV has excellent picture and sound. My husband and I aren't very techy, but we hooked it up easily, and it's very easy to use. HD programs are wonderfully clear. We have a lot of natural sunlight straming into our two homes, so we need a flat screen instead of glossy. The TV arrived from Amazon ahead of the scheduled delivery date, perfectly packaged. The delivery man was considerate and friendly. Plus we saved almost $200 off the cost of buying it locally. I have always been happy with Sony's and I have always been pleased with the service I get from Amazon.com.

Everything is great but needed to add inexpensive speakers made for computer to get really good sound. I got a great deal thru Amazon at $918.

The shipping was not as good as expected. I thought they would take it out of the box, turn it on and set it on the stand. The shipper, Pilot, came in a rental truck, had me sign off and left it with me. Luckily setup was easy and I was good to go within 45 minutes with pretty much full functionality.

One note: though the tv has internet capabilities, you need to purchase a wireless bridge separately to hook it up. Expect to spend an additional $50-$100.

I am very impressed with the KDL-40W5100. The picture is crystal clear when viewing HD programming or playing games from an HD capable gaming system (PS3 in my case). If do you do have a PS3, you'll be quite familiar with the XBR menu systems on this TV. You can access all of the TV's setup options from this menu and even stream TV shows and other media from a select set of Internet sites, if you connect the TV to your LAN.

Speaking of connecting the TV to your LAN, this TV actually comes with an integrated RJ45 ethernet interface for easy connection to your wired LAN. If you don't have an available ethernet jack by your TV, you can purchase a wireless bridge to connect the TV to your wireless network. Once connected, as I said previously, you can stream content straight from the Internet. Also, if you have a Netflix account, you can stream movies directly to the TV! No need for a Roku or similar device. Also, if there are any firmware updates for the TV, you can check right from the XBR menu, and if there are any, you can download and apply the firmware with a few clicks of a button.

It's really one of the most fully functional TVs I've come across. You really can't go wrong with Sony.

"No Tuners" 2009-12-13

It is important to note that this recorder does not have any tuners, limiting its usefulness.

Whether this is right for you, depends on how you are going to use it. If you just want to transfer VHS tapes on to DVD, then this would be OK.

You won't be able to record TV shows without some sort of external tuner. This could be a digital TV tuner for over the air broadcast or a cable box or a dish box.

But, in any case, you will not be able to record a high quality video picture. You will only be able to record in standard definition and not in widescreen.

For copyright protection (so people can't copy high defintion signals), no commercial DVD recorder comes with component or HDMI inputs. They only have composite inputs and in some cases, like with this player, S-video inputs. But, composit and S video are lower qualify.

I prefer a DVD recorder with digital ASTM and QAM tuners. With these, you can take direct digital signals from either over the air, or directly from a cable and record higher definition DVDs in widescreen.

"Cannot control set top box" 2009-11-18

I have a Zenith DTT901 digital TV converter box which I have been using with my VCR; this converter box is one of the highly recommended and popular boxes. I bought the Sony RDR-GX257 to replace my VCR. Verdict: forget it. The Sony could not control, as advertised, my Zenith set top box. In fact, the infra-red output of the set top box controller was so weak that I could barely detect it with my digital camera. For comparison, all of my other infra-red remotes will glow brightly in my digital camera. Didn't try any other features; no reason to.

"HDMI is output only!" 2009-10-11

Day before yesterday, I bought an RDR GX257 expecting to record HDMI signals via my TV. After connect everything, I discovered that the HDMI connector on the RDR GX257 is output only. There is not mention of this on the box; it just has the HDMI logo. Isn't two-way operation was part of the HDMI standard?

All my signals, including the computer are connected to my Samsung LN46A650 TV, which has no video output except the HDMI. I can't record anything but audio with this machine.

To top it off, I had my old Magnavox MWD 200GA DVD player's output connected to the RDR GX257's Line 1 input for a few seconds, and it blew out the left channel of the Magnavox player.

Needless to say, I'm taking it back to Walmart to get my money back. Serves me right for shopping at Walmart!

I bought this player/recorder two days ago. Hooked it up according to instructions. The machine turned on and opened and closed so I know it was working but I got no signal on my TV. I double and triple checked everything and even tried all of my TV's different inputs. Still no signal. I contacted technical support via the phone (not a toll free number, by the way) and after 30+ minutes on long distance I was told the machine must be faulty. I immediately took it back to Wal-Mart (a 20 minute drive one-way)and exchanged it for a new one. Guess what, same problem! I'm very disappointed because I really wanted a DVD that records (the broken one I am replacing recorded) but I can't afford to spend more than what this one cost. All the others I have found cost twice as much or more. I wish things would work like they are supposed to!

"Satellite receiver signal won't pass to TV when DVD recorder turned off." 2009-07-18

The manual says that the unit doesn't need to be powered on for the satellite signal to be viewable on the TV. It doesn't seem to work that way. If I'm not needing the DVD recorder to be powered on, I don't get a TV signal. I have to keep switching the input to the TV for HDMI 1 (when the DVD recorder is on) or Video (direct connection to satellite box, DVD recorder is off).

I'll always allow that I might have hooked up something wrong. I don't think I did, though. Any suggestions? I have a few weeks where this thing can still go back to Walfart.

This TV replaced a 34" Sony CRT HD set. I was concerned about a strong "backlight" situation in our viewing room, but this set performs every bit as well as a strong CRT model as far as brightness.

The Bravia features are great and really demonstrate the power of new capabilities like Internet, Photos, video streaming, and music. I was thinking of putting in a PC in my media room, but this set performs all the functions I was going to use the PC for. Not to mention the user interface is super easy.

Resolution and color is fantastic, and the set performs extremely well with my home theatre.

Excellent picture quality, very easy to use (x-cross media bar looks almost the same as the one in the playstation 3 system) and light enough to hang it on the wall by myself (wall stand purchased separately).

Widgets and online video capabilities are great. Having the possibility to check the weather while watching TV is very helpful (no need to stand up and check in the computer or swith to Weather Channel). Youtube in the TV is great. Very easy and intuitive to use, even kids can control it by their own.

I have no opinion regarding sound quality, since I use it connected to a Home theater.

I really recommend this TV, it's just great and I love it. For about $1,200-1,300 is the best choice by far. Go for it.

I purchased this TV for a friend of mine after spending a few hours viewing the Samsung and LG LED's. I hooked it up for him and spent a few hours viewing and tweeking and generally getting him comfortable with the operation of the set. I am a fan of the Samsung LED tvs but to my eyes the Sonys colors looked a tad deeper and the depth of field also looked deeper and devoid of video noise and artifacts. I also noticed on the Samsung there were some strange artifacts on the outside edges, kinda looked like a very translucent ribbon about an inch wide, running from top to bottom. These are very minor quibbles but I thought the Sony was a bit more refined. I can tell you that this TV looks absolutely stunning on Bluray (Sony BD560) and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Once again, I really like the Samsung but I thought the Sony was a much better value. Just my 2 Cents worth... Dave

What a great TV. I purchased the TV along with BluRay and home theater. With HD inputs (RF, HDMI, etc) the picture quality is stunning, absolutely stunning. The detail and color intensity blow me away on HDTV programming and especially DVDs and BluRays. The TV speaker audio quality is excellent also considering what little Sony has to play with here in terms of speaker placement and cabinet acoustics. The bottom firing speakers offer good sound quality with an extremly clean appearance to the panel. Despite this, the home theater system ( I got the HTSS360) is an amazing auditory leap from the TV alone, so put that in your cart also to take the next step.

My one wish is that analog picture quality (yes I'm a tightwad for some things, at least for now) was better. It is inferior to my 32" Sony that is 10 years old, even when compensating for picture size. (You'll likely get used to it after a bit, I did.) But I knew this going in. Analog and SD picture quality is a not too uncommon complaint on HDTV's, some manufacturers more than others. (Sony is actually not the best here if you believe Consumer Reports) Something in the analog to digital conversion (I've read various technical explanations) simply gets lost. After all, analog reception and display has been refined over 70 years. So be prepared to get an HD upgrade from your cable company or go satellite I suppose to avoid this. I imagine most people will be unlike myself and go HD on their programming when they get this TV.

Otherwise, fantastic unit. Love it.

Technology doesn't get any better than this. Best Buy offered this unit with a Sony BluRay player and a Sony Amplifier with surround sound speakers for the low price of 1754.00 plus tax. We picked it up at the Store and had no trouble getting everything into the car.

The unit was hooked up with two HDMI cables and one Optical Cable but I had to use Component Cables as well. Netgear makes for ease of use when connecting to the Internet, both for the TV and for the BluRay. In one day we were watching DVD's, listening to music in surround sound and hooked up our Netflix account and Video Streaming.

Not enough can be said about this system in full. Sony outdid themselves on this one and I am so glad to own the full system.

Buy it and you will never be sorry!

I am thrilled and delighted with this package. Many have said this or something similar before, but the real reason that I wanted to write this review is to talk about pricing.

I read reviews and looked at various deals on HDTVs for 1 1/2 years since the middle of 2008. I looked at Samsung, Panasonic, and SONY. I almost purchased a Sony from Amazon just after Christmas of 2008 when they were running a great sale. However, I didn't because of the 24 fps judder problem. This new Sony HDTV solves that problem whereas many other HDTVs don't. The price bottomed for one day on Saturday, 11/7, when Sony was running the "See Blu" promotion and Amazon was providing 24 month interest-free financing on the Amazon Store Card for a total price of $1386. It was a phenomenal price on a wonderful package. I purchased it a few days before and actually saw it when the price made it's final jump down by $170 from Friday to Saturday.

I expect that similar deals might be available in the future (perhaps soon) and hope that this pricing history helps everyone in your search for a great product at a great price.

I had owned a Sony 36" XBR WEGA TV for years and was very happy with its performance, but decided it was finally time to upgrade to a HD LCD. After researching them for a couple months, I had narrowed it down to Samsung and Sony in the $1,300-1,500 price range. I choose the Sony because the picture looked more natural. I have to agree with others that reviewed the Samsung that the colors were almost too bright and the off angle view was not as sharp. I couldn't have made a better choice. This TV is amazing. The picture is clear and the HD is great, especially with blu-ray and PS3 games. I can sit back at my dining room table and view the picture from a 35 degree angle with no dark spots or distortion. I only have to have the brightness at a 40 percent level. I've read some reviews that you have to really tweak the picture settings to get the picture right, but I thought it was just fine right out of the box. The pre-set picture modes are easy to toggle through for movies or regular TV, and the 240 hz refresh rate makes games, action movies, and sports flow smoothly without any blur. As for the sound, many people complain about LCD TVs in general, but I thought this one was good. I do have to have the level turned up to 30 and it lacks some bass, but it's much better than I had expected. Lastly, the inputs and outputs are plenty. Has a digital out so I could hook into my stereo. I'm looking forward to hooking up my ethernet cable to explore the video and wiget capabilities.

I am very happy with this TV, KDL-40XBR9. Great picture, great sound, and great features. The price is a bit high but inline with comparable LCD HDTVs.

The TV needed no adjustment out of the box. The picture is clear and bright. The SD picture seemed a bit blotchy at first but I've noticed that the source signal is the culprit and some channels look better than others with my DTV+Tivo receiver. I don't have HD yet.

The built in speakers are very good but if you want the home theater experience then go with an x.1 sound system.

One thing that led me to get this model is the size. The front bezel is a low profile design which makes this TV close in size to many 37" units. Most 40" TVs in this price range will not fit in my cabinet and I was limited to a 37" until I found this one.

Now to my favorite part, the internet connectivity. Online content is where Sony's BRAVIA Internet enabled devices shine. Internet video, music, news, weather, and more at my fingertips with one network connection to the TV. I believe this will improve over time with more content and features. The network connection is wired ethernet and broadband service is needed for streaming audio/video. The picture quality from Netflix and Sony streaming services is very good, better than DVD in most cases. I haven't tried Amazon VOD yet.

If you don't want to run network cable to the TV you can use a wireless bridge. Sony has built in support (setup menu) for Linksys WET610N but others should work and a number of Wi-Fi routers support Wireless Bridge/Client Mode. The Zyxel P-330W router is one and it works very well.

I gave this TV four stars because the setup menu could be better and more intuitive. The remote layout is a bit cluttered. Another "issue" is that it loses the date/time settings if it loses power.

I just got this tv with bundle offer from circuitcity.

I m in process of checking all features one by one.So far so good.

I observed following things - not sure if it is an issue or not. If somebody has encounterd this problem with xbr9 Serices -pls let me know

1) While navigating using XBar menu ,background color is blue and some time black.Is there issue that it should come only black but not blue for xbar menu? I have PS3 80GB model (non slim) which has same menu and background color is always black

2) In weather widget, i want to add new city and display when i click on weather widget,I am not able to do that.I can delet city from widget.On screen i m not getting new reactangle for new city.

thanks in advance for any input on these points.

This DVD player comes in multiple colors, and some colors are available at lower prices. Be sure to check out the prices for each color unless you have your heart set on a specific color.

The picture quality on this DVD player is outstanding and significantly better than other portable DVD players in similar sizes. The audio quality, however, is mediocre, as is the case on most portable DVD players. You can of course get much better audio quality via headphones.

The controls are very easy to use, and a similarly easy to use remote control is included. The player reads discs quickly, which is not always the case on DVD players in general.

No carrying case is included, so you may want to also purchase a compatible case, if you plan to travel with the unit. Otherwise, it could get scratched.

The battery life is also very good, considering other portable DVD players can barely make it through one movie.

I would buy this DVD player again and highly recommend it.

The movies appear grainy even when the source (dvd) is very clear. Compared to Coby which is a cheaper brand, the images and resolution are much more superior to Sony. This DVD player has very good image quality, when you can see it. For approximately 30 seconds you can enjoy the bright, sharp picture afforded by this DVD player...before the screen blanks. Switching the player off for a while to give it a breather will bring the screen back, but sadly equally briefly. Clearly this is not working as intended and we have a duff player.

What I can say, from the short periods that the player has worked, is that the sound is plenty loud enough (a great improvement on the LG machine we previously owned) and that the player looks quite stylish. Other downsides (apart from the lack of a picture, which is pretty fundamental) are that despite its claims to the contrary it doesn't actually play recordable DVD disks, or at least not reliably. I tried an assortment of DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs and got about a 50% success rate. These are all undamaged disks that play fine in my laptop.

For those of you looking to player non-region 1 disks, there also doesn't appear to be (at present) a hack for this player.

"I love this beastly blu-ray player" 2010-01-04

I've had this player for about 3 months now, and let me tell you, I love it. Although far from perfect, with the gracenote and speed issues, but this is certainly a product I am happy I've purchased.

The good:

- Holds 400 blu-rays! That's what you're paying for. I have a place to store all of my blu-rays and can easily navigate through them.

- Great picture and sound quality.

- Holds 400 blu-rays.

- Fairly easy to navigate. Could have improvements here, but much better than I've seen on other changers.

- Can output audio with both RCA and HDMI. This is nice because I have this hooked up to 4 tvs, and 1 has only DVI for video, but I can still use the analog audio for stereo sound.

- Did I mention it holds 400 blu-ray discs.

The not-so good:

- Gracenote needs to get their act together. I would say about 90% of my discs were right. That's 10% error. Seems pretty crappy for a company that only has to update a database. I'm sure Sony is paying them quite a bit of money to use their service, and they can't even show a blu-ray image for Casino or Crank or know what Lock, Stock and Two Smokin' Barrels is. Seems like if your business is to database movies, you'd keep your database current.

- Blu-rays are slow. This isn't necessarily the players fault, because they're slow loading on my PS3 too. The Blu-ray camp needs to get this working better.

- Can't resume play on all titles. Again, not the players fault, but another Blu-ray issue.

In summary, I recommend this to anyone who can house this beast. If you buy a lot of blu-rays or DVDs and you're considering dropping $200 on a single disc blu-ray player, save up and buy this thing instead. It looks much cooler than a rack of blu-ray cases.

We were planning on buying a $300 LG BD390 originally, but Christmas was coming up and this item went on sale for < $600. I decided that the difference would be my Christmas present and went ahead and splurged on this beauty not without a little guilt over something that seemed so egregiously over the top. I am so glad that I did. This thing is AWESOME! I spent about 30 minutes stuffing it with DVDs and BluRays and then connected it to the internet (via an ICS connection to a Vista machine near by - that was a pain - connecting it to my router was trivial) and let Gracenote do all the work. About two hours later (198 DVDs and BluRays later) it had identified every single DVD and BluRay with the exception of the 2008/9 Rambo and some screwy information for Four Christmases. All the other DVDs/BluRays (including some unusual ones like particular versions of 'Akira') were handled properly.

I cannot convey enough how nice it is to never search for a DVD again as I use the Sony xbar interface to scroll through my movies. It also has a very nice auto-letterboxing feature that lets me show the majority of my DVDs in 2.35:1 (which really makes a difference on my giant 2.35:1 screen.) I'd buy it again tomorrow. My only gripe is that the remote really REALLY needs to be backlit so you can find the buttons in the dark. That's a common problem though.

I almost forgot to mention the rental disc slot which is a great feature. This baby uses slot #1 (of the 400 available) as the 'rental slot' and if you press the rental slot button it will open/close on this slot alone so you can quickly/easily add/remove rented movies. A minor but thoughtful addition. BTW, there was, last week, a firmware update for this device that the machine pulled down after notifying me in the interface.

My wife bought me this for Christmas. I read all of the reviews before I received it and the only true negative about the product was the Gracenote database. Listen out of 200 disks loaded so far I think I have 10 that were not found on the database. Which to me isnt that big of a deal but never the less it can be a problem and a disadvatange to the system, but with that said, the whole package did not disappoint. It came right out of the box and turned on updated itself and then I was ready to load all of my movies and other media. Its probably for the price one of the best units out there on the market. I have recommended it to all of my friends and family. You should check it out.

I have a small man-cave, so this is wonderful device is overkill. However, given my 500+ disc collection, it definitely made life easier, especially with my anxiety about kids scratching and not taking care of my discs. This keeps their grubby little hands off them. :) ...

Technically speaking, for most people, Blu-Ray players do not get better than the Sony BDP-CX960. Pure HDMI 1080/24 video output.Multichannel PCM audio output via HDMI 1.3 audio for Bravia-sync receivers. Digitial optical, coaxial and stereo audio for every other brand. However, there is no wi-fi for the heavy need for Internet, which you will use for the Gracenote categorization and BD-Live components. I had to move my home router to my man-cave just to avoid buying a separate wi-fi NIC for this one unit. Small irritation.

In addition, there is no native bitstream decoding via HDMI, so the 1.3 output (and if you happen to have HDMI 1.3 input on your receiver) is really not able to be used at its full potential. 99.999% of the people won't care about that though. Decoding is only to PCM, which is, frankly, fine with me. I'm not even sure I have the ear to tell difference if it was pointed out to me. Long story short, especially for early Blu-ray adopters like me who spent nearly $500 on a slow, dinosaur of a Sony Blu-Ray player, the Sony BDP-CX960 is the right price for an exceptional product.

I bought 2 of these on June 30, 2008 (1.5 years ago)-- I pink and one blue. I came to write this review today because my son is in his room watching something on his and my wife is in our room watching something on the other.

Some history-- I purchased a "dual" brand for the back of the car's seats before I bought these. We never even took those out of the car and they broke within a month without the kids even touching them. I purchased these ones for our '08 summer vacation/long road trip. My kids use them in the car, at home, at sleepovers, on airplanes...everywhere! We don't even have cases-- they just hold them and move along.

The picture is super clear, the sound is great, the battery lasts forever.... No complaints. And it's still kicking after all this time. The kids drop them, stand on them, lose them at the bottom of the toybox.... you all get the idea.

I'd buy it again in a heartbeat!

I love the fact that this one has a battery backup and that you can pause a DVD and pick up where you left off - we did not have this feature before and what a pain to get a movie back to where you left off. This player is light and the picture is great! The controls are easy to use. About the only feature missing is a way to hang this player on the back of a seat so the child does not need to hold it in order to watch it. Other than that it has been great.

This is an absolutely great player. I ordered it to use on long trips for my 2 year old. It performed incredibly well. Great sound, the best resolution I've seen on a portable. Size is perfect. However, it was misrepresented on the site. I need a region-free player to play international DVD's. It didn't do as advertised. So I had to return it. I also have to say, Amazon was amazing about taking it back and promptly giving me a refund. I wish I could have kept this player.

I bought a Sony DVP-FX820 portable DVD player in July of 2008 and it has already failed after light usage. I liked the player a lot, but the video now ceases to work after two minutes of playing a DVD (the audio still works).

While Sony customer service answered the telephone quickly and they were very helpful in concluding it was a hardware failure, I am disappointed with premature failure of this DVD player. Clearly, this product has not lived up to Sony's reputation for relability.

Finally, potential buyers of similar Sony products should remain mindful of their crappy warranty, which is 90 days for labor and 1 year on parts. I wonder if this is indicative of Sony's lack of confidence in their own products? The labor alone will be $30 to $40 in this case, so I suggest using a credit card that doubles the manufacturer's warranty.

I purchased this dvd player for my 5 year old son. He previously had a Coby 10 inch portable dvd, that lasted 3 years. I regret not repurchasing that model. THis dvd player does not utilize the full 8 inch screen. Most all the videos play at a reduced 5 inch size (letter box). The Coby 10 inch always filled the entire screen. I have to go into the settings and "stretch" the picture manually to have it fit the whole screen. If you watch the movies in "full screen" mode then the battery life is less than the 6 hours.

The buttons are at the bottom of the screen and often times get inadvertently pushed since they are so sensitive. I don't advise watching it in a dark car because you will never hit the right buttons. I'm very disappointed. If you are purchasing this for a child, I don't advise it. I highly suggest the Coby 10 inch. The Coby was a nice dvd player, very easy for a child to work, and the price is [...]--much less than this one.

This portable DVD has been wonderful for my family. Our old one died and we had to return two additional DVD players due to poor battery life and picture quality. Sony makes an outstanding portable DVD player. The battery life is 5 hours and that's no exaggeration! Screen is a bit smaller than I would prefer, but great picture quality makes up for that and the controls are very straightforward and easy to use. The 2 headphone jacks are also a big plus as we have two little ones and have to travel with them frequently. This definitely keeps everyone a little saner on the airplane:) Great quality and an excellent value.

Bought this portable dvd player for my kids for Christmas after reading many reviews. I thought I had done my homework, but I didn't realize I was missing some important information:

1. Picture Quality - Does not live up to some of its reviews. The resolution is poor; like looking at the picture through a window screen. The tiny grid-like effect gave me a migraine. Picture very dark. After checking the instruction manual for product specs, I found the screen resolution is a low 480 x 234 pixels. I quess with todays Hdtv's I'm really used to crisp images. By the way, this information on screen resolution is missing from the product specs and technical info on the amazon product page.

2. Sound Quality - We have owned Sony TV's, dvd players, & computers and the sound quality has always been top notch..not so with this player. The sound comes from one speaker along the bottom of the screen and as another reviewer puts it, sounds hollow.

3. Overall Product Quality - There is significant amount of noise and vibration while dvd is playing; had to turn volume up just to block some of this annoying feature.

Good News:

1. Long-lasting Battery! Not sure about its longevity though.

2. Light-weight & easy to carry around.

3. Better quality than a majority of the cheap models: Despite its problems, it is preferable to some of the cheaper alternatives.

That said, this dvd player was purchased to replace a Zenith model that we had for about 5-6 years. The old one finally bit the dust after my 3-year old dropped it numerous times(we can still get it to play occasionally.) My Zenith was way superior to this Sony in every way, the picture was so clean and crisp and the sound was wonderful! Too bad they don't make that model anymore!

I'm still contemplating keeping this (the kids don't seem to be as picky as I and it is for their use), or returning it for the Sony 9-inch 800 x 480 resolution screen.

I bought this a week ago to replace a DVD Player that died. It was on sale at a local store for $89. Took it home, charged it up and tested it out. Initially, it worked great. A couple things bugged me - the inconvenient power button on the side, the so-so resolution. But the price was right and it was compact and the battery life was decent. So, a week later it is freezing up on every disc I play. New, old, it doesn't matter. I tried watching an hour-long TV show on it and it froze up 4 times. Twice I had to restart from the beginning and shut the unit down. It did this on several discs, so I know it is not the disc. I am fed up with it and returning it. Maybe I got a bum unit, but I am taking it back and looking at others. My recommendation is to buy it locally and see for yourself. I love amazon, but if you end up with a dud it is easier to take it back to the store and get full credit. I'm bummed, I really wanted this to work and now I am back to square one and figuring out a player.

I looked at many BD players before Christmas came around. Samsungs, Dennons, Lgs you name it. I love the WiFi connection for updates. I have not downloaded any movies yet but as far as picture quality A+. Sound is good but not absolue premium, however that is what your AV reciever is for! My recomendation for that is the Onkyo brand, but that is another topic! This unit was set up in les than one minute with HDMI and WiFi updated instanly once I put my security passsword in. The menu on this player is exactly like a PS3, which is easy and quick! Overall I would tell you that if you can get this player you will be happy!

In less than 2 hrs I had this packed up and shipped back to Sony. I set it all up and it immediately wanted to do an update of the firmware. Everything appeared to go fine. I shut it off and went back to watch a movie and it would not boot. System error. Sony said send back. I could have sent it to Amazon and got a new one quicker but I decided Sony could tell me what went wrong and send it back updated. I wanted to make sure it was not me that caused it. Sony sent it back 2 weeks later. The wireless card went bad. Now that it is back and repaired it seems fine. Only time will tell.

Didn't play all my backups. when i first started backing up my dvds i used some questionable media. many dvd players do not play this kind of media, including this unit. ive grown since then and i now use verbatims which work fine on this player. if your not trying to play questionable media then this unit is probably great, but if you are, try getting Philips DVP5990 HDMI 1080p Upscaling DVD Player. it plays EVERYTHING.

It's easy to use and all you do is hit play, adjust the volume, turn the HOLD BUTTON ON to prevent your child from touching all of the buttons and you're ready to go. The resolution is great, clear-- a nice clear LCD picture. I also turn it around 180 degrees to keep our daughter from hitting the eject button. I used it on a full charge for an 8 hour flight, hitting the off and on button a number of times and it lasted all throughout the flight. It's perfect for the plane, car or hotel room. I used a european converter to charge it (Ireland) and it worked just fine.

Have been using for about 6 months. Plays fine on smooth roads but a moderate road bump (PA Turnpike) makes it stop and start the dvd over from the beginning. This has happened many, many times. Also, the "lock" button on the side is right next to the power button- very easy for young fingers to hit the wrong button and render the remote useless, leading to a lot of frustration from the front seat, trying to talk them through why it's not working right.

I bought this in May 2009. The player is actually very easy to use. My daughter is happy to see movies in a car for a long ride. But after 6 months the screen started working funny. Then it finally lost video. I could hear the sound, but no picture at all. Through Sony's customer service website, I applied the exchange program. The total cost was $33.00 which is not too bad. It took about less than 2 weeks to receive the exchanged player that is refurbished. That one has worked fine so far. However, the former player I sent back to Sony looked much cleaner and newer. I feel like I paid $178.19 + $33.00 for getting the second hand DVD player. So I am NOT very happy.

This player is a great value for the money. Setup was very easy. I connected this wirelessly using the Linksys WET610N ethernet bridge using the top port of my DirectTV DVR for VOD and the bottom port to this Blu-Ray Player. The Netflix setup involves finding your Sony activation and code and typing that into your Netflix account, but is very straight forward. I did have a minor issue with video streaming freezing while playing, but that was due to my ISP having an issue with the DSL line, which they corrected within 8 hours of my reporting the issue. Since this correction Netflix streaming very good but not HD quality, which I did not expect for SD DVD account I have with Netflix. The added Michael Jackson videos is a nice touch as well. Blu Ray video quality is amazing and DVD quality is very good.

I highly recommend this product.

We tried the recommended Linksys by Cisco Wireless N Ethernet Bridge with dual Band to view Netflix movies/shows. We configured the Linksys Bridge both through the bluray player itselfLinksys by Cisco WET610N Wireless-N Ethernet Bridge with Dual-Band and using a PC and the setup disk. We could get the Bluray to access Netflix and Amazon Video on demand. However, the bridge could not keep the internet link up. We returned the linksys unit and bought an Apple Airport ExpressApple Airport Express. We setup the Airport Express to extend our Time Capsule Network (802.11n) and it works perfectly now. Netflix and Amazon On Demand work fine, no stopping, skipping, locking up any more. Bottomline, if you have an Apple Wi-fi network setup, use the Airport Express to extend your network to the bluray player.

I did about 3 weeks worth of research of reviews, wants, needs, and price before I purchased this. While I didn't buy this from Amazon, I used the site for research. If you want a very good Blu Ray player that produces a great picture, upconverts well, and does Netflix flawlessly then BUY THIS!

While it doesn't have what some think is good, wireless connectivity, it does have wired connectivity. I went with wired because a wired connection is much more reliable and should be used for firmware upgrades. Speaking of firmware upgrades, the Nextfilx upgrade went very smooth(I did my via a burned CD). It's even easier when done hardwired to your home's local network.

All pros so far!

I really like this blu ray thus far. I purchased it right after Thanksgiving and I have no major issues as of yet. The firmware has been updated twice with no problems, and the set up was easy. The main reason for this purchase was to stream Netflix, and I must say I have enjoyed watching movies instantly. I am also enjoying all of the other extras like Slacker radio and Amazon Video on Demand, and [...] and NPR. I haven't explored much otherwise, but there is a lot there to choose from. The only complaints I have (which is why I didn't give this a 5) is that it takes a moment for the movies to restart once you rewind or fast forward and I can't see where I'm rewinding to because whats on the screen stays on the screen while the film rewinds itself. I also cannot seem to figure out how to insert closed captioning when watching streaming film, so you're hearing impaired you may have issues. What I do like is that the picture quality is great, and you can resume play even after turning off the machine (for streaming video).

All of the initial setup is normal and straightforward. When you set up the unit for an internet connection, be patient. Connecting the cat 5 cable will show the 'internet desktop menu' immediately. Set up for Netflix (you need to be a member)

#1- the sony instruction book provides an internet address to go to to register the N460 for Netflix, supposedly works better in IE8, however I use Firefox 3.5. Clear the address bar on your home page, type in the address provided. This will (should) take you to the Sony website to register your unit, and the fact you are connecting to Netflix,

#2- The Sony site will give you a SECOND Access code and another internet address to go to register the Sony unit. (If you have difficulty, call Netflix customer service at 1-866-716-0414 and their rep will walk you through the process) When you put in this access code, it will register your Sony N460 with Netflix,, within minutes, the Sony will connect to the Netflix site.

After that, any list of movies in your Netflix Que, shows as movie covers like on dvd box, scroll through your list, highlite, click, in minute or two it boots and your watching your movie.

Highly recommend the Sony N460

What I'm using:

My internet connection is a solid 3MB/sec connection. The Sony N460 is connected to a Sony 1080p lcd TV, though any 1080p TV with hdmi connection should provide an excellent picture. Composite, S-Video, or component will provide lesser quality as will 720p TV, etc. currently use Netgear 101HBX wired connection (cat five from your internet router to Netgear unit in electrical outlet of your home, then another Netgear module is used where your Sony N460 unit/ TV are located, another room doesn't matter. I also have a netgear switch as there is more than one cat5 connection after the Netgear module in the electrical outlet.(cheaper than another Netgear module). This gives your a hardwired cat5 ethernet connection from your internet source to the Sony and will work anywhere you have an electrical outlet and need internet connection. Wireless- for movie streaming, hear/read of too many issues/ problems and for movie watching I personally have no patience for the interruptions. Not like sending an email or photo. Cannot comment if wireless, but if you have an electrical outlet the Netgear works (other companies have similar products).

Netflix recommends 1.5MB/sec as the minimum. Faster is better. At 3MB it works well, picture quality from the Sony N460, using a quality HDMI cable (high speed, 1.3a, etc. you don't need real expensive,, but a $10 cable will not look as good at the $40-60 cable,, paid $40 for mine over year ago. Picture quality is excellent and very little stoppage. If you want 100% perfection, rent the disc and you will still have a bad disc once in awhile. I give Netflix a 99%+. The convenience, access, for the Money makes Netflix a super buy.. If you have the connection speed, Netflix is a super way to stream movies. If you have 10MB+ you can stream HD movies. That connection is not available where I live. Satellite systems will constantly interrupt your movie unless you pay for a very High speed package and then if it's Hughes Satellite, I would say you will be very unhappy. Hughes is the worst money you can spend- if you must have satellite use Blue Sky.

I haven't purchased a DVD player in probably 10 years so when I opened this box, I was shocked at how small and light this DVD player is! It's a couple pounds, about half the width of my cable box and slightly longer than a magazine (to give you a visual). The quality is great and for the price, it's a must! I'm considering purchasing another one to replace my huge, old DVD player that takes up half of a shelf of my entertainment center.

I've read a lot of mixes reviews, but didn't have any general problems with the player. It was kind of loud when it loaded a disc. The main problem was that I needed this player to repeat discs and it simply wouldn't. I'm not sure if it was a flaw in one machine or a problem with the model in general. I contacted Sony support through e-mail and got a response to use the manual. I contacted online support who basically took me through the same process with no help. After a week, I'm returning it for a new brand.

Looks like it's a nice DVD player for the price if you're wanting to watch movies. If you want things to repeat, though, seems like it doesn't work properly.

I got to play three or four DVDs over the first three months, around my busy travel time. Suddenly, the Elch kidnapped the DVD I had in there and refused to allow the door to be opened. I had to finally take the top cover off to retrieve my DVD. The player was out of warranty, of course, so I called Sony and they wanted $33 flat rate to fix it. I asked for tech help and was told the only first-echelon solution to ELch is to attempt a unit reboot. I did several times to no avail. Finally, realizing it was not worth the repair costs, I opened it again and searched for a mechanical lock. I was ready to break it off if I did find one. No luck and one of the gears fell off. I now am trying to find the address of the president of Sony USA so I can send it to him and wish him many hours of enjoyment. Overall -- nice looking, but cheaply made with the ridiculous door lock. A regular customer of Sony in the past, I feel cheated by this product. I am now shopping for another brand.

"Worst delivery ever" 2010-01-02

I'm sure this Sony BR Player works as good as my previous one if not better. My complaint is about the long delivery time to get it to me. I ordered it (and paid for it) on Dec 10, 09. It wasn't shipped until Dec 27, 09 and it arrived on Dec 29, 09. There was no explanation and no obvious reason for the delay. Amazon delegated my purchase to Video Audio Center and they did not provide email or on-line status of my purchase, shipment or expected arrival date. Ordering an item two weeks before Christmas is plenty of time to get where it's supposed to be - no excuse to ship it after the holiday, especially when you pay up front. This is my first (hopefully last) negative experience with Amazon.

I bought this as a surprise Christmas present for my parents. The one thing I made sure to look for was a NIC card, which this provides (There was an update available when I took it out of the box). I also had a spare USB thumb drive and it uses that as storage for BD-Live data now. The startup time is adequate, and is even better when you enable the "quick start" option which consumes a bit more power but decreases startup time dramatically. One great thing about this: IT IS SMALL. About the size of most DVD players, and barely weighs anything. Well done Sony.

I picked one of these up on sale for $125 and it plays movies perfectly. The picture quality is amazing and the sound is great even on my old two channel stereo.

Only two things keep me from giving it 5 stars. 1) Lack of Netflix streaming support. 2) No front side USB port, the plug is in the back which requires using a usb extension cable to reach.

I bought this Blu-ray player along with a Sony HTSS360 5.1 channel Home Theater System about 6 weeks ago. Both are connected to a Sharp AQUOS LC52LE700UN 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV via HDMI cable. The picture is beautiful. It is crisp, clean and of the highest quality I have seen on any TV with any Blu-ray player.

This Blu-ray Disc player is easy to set up and use and has most of the features of the newest players at a much lower price. This player does not support Netflix online, Pandora, or other such features, so if those are required features for you this is not the right player. Many reviews also mention that the remote lacks an eject button. My thoughts on that are simple: get over it! Can you take the disc out and put it away, or put in another disc sitting on the couch? An eject button on the player is sufficient for me.

My bottom line is this: If you're looking for a less expensive Blu-ray player that plays Blu-ray discs and DVDs with fantastic picture quality, fast load times, and all of the basic features, I recommend this model hands down. I recommend it for family and friends, and I would buy it again for myself in a heartbeat!
